Phonics

Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing by connecting sounds (phonemes) with letters (graphemes). Instead of memorizing whole words, children learn how letters sound and how to blend those sounds to read words.

🔤 1. What is Phonics (Simple Idea)

Phonics = Letter → Sound → Word

Example:

  • c → /k/
  • a → /a/
  • t → /t/
    👉 Blend: cat

🧠 2. Why Phonics is Important

  • Helps children read new words easily
  • Improves spelling
  • Builds confidence in reading
  • Strong foundation for English learning

🔑 3. Basic Phonics Sounds

  • b → bat
  • c → cat
  • d → dog
  • f → fish
  • g → goat

🔄 4. Blending Sounds

Blending means joining sounds together:

  • c + a + t = cat
  • d + o + g = dog
  • s + u + n = sun

👉 This is the most important phonics skill.

✂️ 5. Segmenting (Breaking Words)

Opposite of blending:

  • cat → c / a / t
  • sun → s / u / n

🔊 6. Types of Phonics

  • Synthetic Phonics: Learn sounds first, then blend (best for beginners)
  • Analytic Phonics: Learn words and patterns
  • Jolly Phonics: Fun method using actions + songs (very popular)

🎯 7. Example Practice

  • Say the sounds: m – a – p
  • Blend → map

Try:

  • p – e – n → ?
  • b – i – g → ?

🧩 8. Easy Teaching Tips (for your coaching class)

  • Use flashcards
  • Teach 1 sound per day
  • Use actions & stories
  • Practice blending daily
  • Keep sessions fun and short
